The Lands of The Sound of Music, Mozart, and Pope Benedict XVI (aka Salzburg and Munich)

We started off with a bus ride...

... pretty much everyone fell asleep (except for Erin and I, who took pictures ;-)

Our first stop of the trip: Franziskaner Kirche. The Franciscan church in Salzburg. It was an eclecticly intriguing mixture of Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque architecture.

The altar

The ceiling... very Gothic.

The extremely ornate Baroque altar

Dan and Ari at the restaurant. Ari declared that girls were weird and that he hated the color pink ;-)

Clare, Me, Joan

The Sisters with Alyssa, Erin and Alexis

Alyssa and Erin looking cute

Alexis

Me and Clare... self-portraits don't usually turn out so great...

Mozart's birthplace!

The fountain Maria Von Trapp splashed her hand in during the "confidence" song

Just like Maria... only shorter
California roomies!

Erin and David, who hasn't gotten lost... yet.

Julie ;-)

Me, looking up

Our lovely tour guide, bus leader and RD... Jess!

Joan, Dan and Heather

Napoleon's restaurant, where he actually sat and ate. It looked a little too fancy to eat at...

A beautiful Marian side-altar... unfortunately I can't remember which church this was at.

I think St. Rupert is buried here... it's a saint there for sure, I'm just a little fuzzy on the details.

Another organ for Elizabeth.

A cemetery that inspired the scene in The Sound of Music where they all hide behind large gravestones in the abbey.

Trapped?

Weird modern art. Strangely enough we saw a statue of an identical man in Munich.

Neptune's Fountain... it used to be the public bathing place in Salzburg. Now dolls float on puzzle pieces and normal people wonder why.

Kathryn, Heather and Chris climb the stairway to the fortress

We're a long way up!

Peter never did get to climb on that pyramid of cannon balls...

Overlooking the city

Beauty incarnate.

A random little house on a patch of clear land in the middle of Salzburg.

Disciples looking contemplative.

Most of the group... Anna, Heather, Clare, Kathryn, Chris, Peter.

Peter scaling a mountain?

Peter Lee... yoohoo!

How do you get to this door?

Me with the Sketchy Bishop.

Grant with the Sketchy Bishop.

Torture device

An organ without keys or pedals... a giant music box with pipes?

The abbey church in Nonnberg, where they filmed the sisters at chapter and prayer in The Sound of Music (in the beginning). We were very fortunate to arrive there while the cloistered sisters were singing evening prayer from behind the screens. A mystical and serene music filled the church.

Biggest animal cookies ever!!!

The guys pretending to be serious at the Mirabell Palace concert.

Appreciating classical music.

Grant at the head of the table... what emotion does this induce in you?

Julie and me in the Sound of Music tunnel that Maria and the children skip and sing down... at least we think it was that tunnel ;-)

Julie, Val and Katy on the bridge.

Don't jump Anna!

Unbeknownst to most of the world, there was a massacre of little men all over Salzburg and the chalk drawings are still there! Way to go figuring that one out, Peter!

Grant with the original Red Bull.

Katy takes the bull by the horns.

Peter was salivating over this music shop...

The Lanz store in Salzburg.

The Glockenspiel. AMDG climbed up and waved their t-shirts from the top. Typical and extraordinary at the same time...

The Munich Frauenkirche that Pope Benedict XVI presided over as cardinal for some years.

St. Sebastian. This is for you Kyle.

The tomb of Louis the Bavarian, who always argued with the Pope.

Erin in the sunlight.

The devil put one foot in this church and left post-haste!

The Holy Father's coat of arms.

Hi coat of arms as a cardinal.

The earthly remains of St. Mundicia, a Roman martyr and the patron saint of single women... yes, they told us this specifically during our tour and told us to wait in line... oh Franciscan.

Thus begins a series of photographs of Thomas with a gargoyle...

Dan with the lion who guarded the entrance to Anger Street, where there was a place to get married. Sounds promising, eh?

Erin and Emily laugh at Dan's antics while we wait for David to get un-lost and smell a trashcan burning.

Dan following his creed for Austria: climb every mountain, jump in every body of water!

Erin and Alyssa at the English Gardens, which we finally arrived at after much travail.

We probably shouldn't have stood on this monument to the park's founder...

Clare, Alexis, Emily and David

Alyssa and Dan

Duck-whisperers...

We went to the Hofbrauhaus for dinner. This is half of the group: David, Erin, Clare and Alyssa.

The other half: Dan, Emily, Alexis, Me.

Swing dancing at the Hofbrauhaus... so awesome!!!!

Dusk besets Munich

Giant chess set outside of St. Peter's Cathedral in Salzburg.

A Live game of Checkers.

Inside St. Peter's... there are four small organs in the front and a GIANT one in the back.

Jake serenaded us during brunch with songs of his own composition. Good job, Jake! It was beautiful!

Dan was happy to get a stein from both the Hofbrauhaus and the Augustiner, and frightened us all by pretending he was tipsy. ;-D

We stopped at Mondsee on the way back to Gaming. This is the church where Maria and the Captain were married.

One of my favorite churches so far. The decor was not overwhelming, but neither was it austere. The pillars were pink!

*sigh* I was SO surprised to find my name among the saint portraits at Mondsee! I could not justify spending 28 euros that I didn't have on it though, so I took pictures instead. Someday I'll translate the biography that's on the back.

Charming little shops in Mondsee.

Fr. Brad eats his "glorified ho-ho"

My raspberry cream tart was DELICIOUS!!!!

Sunset over Austria... onward to Gaming!
